This explainer book evolved almost as beautiful as the butterfly does in its own life cycle and was created to make difficult words like metamorphosis and chrysalis seem easy for children to read and understand.
Final mockup of the front and back. I think it looks amazing. Research found that the milkweed plant is where the adult butterfly likes to lay its eggs and so those leaves were the inspiration for the front and back cover.
The Museum of History & Discovery brief asked for an "explainer book" on a topic of my choosing. I chose to teach about "How a Butterfly Turns Into a Caterpillar."
First I start with a mindmap to capture all keywords that come to mind as I brainstorm. Then I sketch out the page layout ideas.
My moodboard about the circle of life.
The life cycle assets from an egg to caterpillar to a cocoon and finally a butterfly took most of the hours allotted to create.
Digital sketches bring the idea to life. I also show the color scheme, asset direction, and layout ideas.
